Since talking or texting on a cell phone is now illegal and comes with a hefty fine you would think less drivers are participating in these bad habits. Unfortunately, this is not the case. When you’re driving on the highway, or even around the block, you will most likely pass someone who is talking on the phone, or worse, texting while driving.
It has been reported that there have been more fatal accidents due to distracted driving than impaired driving in Ontario so far this year. When you choose to text or talk on the phone you are decreasing the amount of focus and attention you have on the road while driving. This is extremely dangerous for you and the motorists around you.
The OPP continues to educate the public about the obvious dangers of distracted driving. The OPP has also begun their province wide distracted driving blitz which will focus on looking for individuals who are careless driving. The OPP hopes to deter the public from using their phones or hand held devices such as iPods, or GPS systems while driving. The province of Ontario has also brought forward new legislation that, if passed, would take the penalty for distracted driving from $60-$300 to $300-$1000 and three demerit points.
A great trick that some motorists utilize is turning their phone on silent. This way you won’t be tempted to even answer your phone while behind the wheel. Turn it back onto its normal ringer once you’ve arrived at work and carry on with your day. Your phone calls and texts can wait until you are safely parked, at work, or at home. It is not worth risking your life, and others lives while on the road.
